Hard hitting, energetic and ultimately very interesting hardcore that never sinks to the lowest common meathead level, without being all arty-farty and up in the clouds either. Goes Cube, who hail from Brooklyn, New York, have managed to create something that’ll extend beyond the hardcore/punk scene the same way that Torche on ‘Meanderthal’ shook loose from the constraints of genre. Fire on ‘Restore’ and you’ll hear plenty of musical similarities existing between the bands too. The kind-of Kurt Cobain flat vocal delivery in the verse is sent skywards in the chorus, while musically they dip their toes into the post-hardcore pool. There’s a rock out three-quarters of the way through that will have Pelican fans caught in sway.

“Grinding the Knife Blade” is like an English hardcore song but during the verse has the steady driving oomph of System Of A Down. “I Hold Grudges” is a deceivingly simplistic, punchy tune, built around an almost constant thumping snare hit that pushes it forwards, the vocals spitting like a demented man in a cage.

“Saab Sonnet” then starts off all ringing notes and soundscape, like MGR or Red Sparowes, before rolling in one of those grooving Torche riffs again. The light verse and chorus could almost sneak onto The Hills soundtrack, but its too pure to be sneered at. At times it’s like they’ve got Weezer circa their self-titled blue album’s gift for bringing in a hook. Never afraid to throw it back to the wolves though as the song progresses they bring in plenty of heft. “Back To Basics” has plenty of weight to throw around, with some massive Taint style riffs and the sort of noisy chorus Therapy? would be proud of.

Another Day Has Passed is not a perfect record, despite its Mastodon-ish riffing, “Clenching Jaws” is a little dull, but if there’s any justice in the world this band are going to be on everyone’s lips by the end of the year. If they’re not though then do yourself a favour at least and check them out. One thing you won’t be is sorry.
